AAAR 2015

I recently attended the annual conference of the American Association for Aerosol Research, which was held this year in Minneapolis. Having been based in Europe until this summer I hadn’t attended this meeting before. There were many interesting sessions on atmospheric aerosols, aerosol nucleation and growth and instrumentation that were directly relevant to my research.… More AAAR 2015

Aerosols: linking health and climate

Ilona Riipinen, associate professor at Stockholm University, researches aerosols and their interactions with clouds, climate and human health. I had the pleasure of working with her on the CLOUD collaboration during my doctoral studies. She recently gave this  TEDx talk about how the health effects of aerosols are key to climate action.

Aerosol Nucleation

I mentioned in a previous post that over half of the aerosols in the atmosphere with the ability to act as cloud condensation nuclei (the seeds on which clouds form) are formed directly in the atmosphere from the gas phase in a process called nucleation. Here I will explain a bit about how that occurs. Individual… More Aerosol Nucleation

Aerosols and Climate

My main motivation in studying aerosols is that we need to understand them better in order to improve our understanding of climate change. Aerosols scatter sunlight (that’s why they can make the air look hazy). Aerosols also are needed for clouds to form, and the amount, size and composition of the aerosols can affect the properties… More Aerosols and Climate
